
Throughout the years the Sullivan Celtic Bands has established itself as one of the finest middle school programs in the state of California. You will in the months and weeks that follow work very hard with your fellow students to perfect your skills and work together as a team to continue the tradition of excellence that is the Sullivan Middle School. The instructional staff puts much pride into writing and teaching the shows. We expect each student and parent to invest similar time and energy for all to enjoy a successful season in keeping with the Sullivan tradition.
Organizations
Beginning Band: Grades 6, 7, 8. Prerequisites: None. Emphasis is placed on learning basic musical skills such as tone production, rhythm, technique, intonation, and musicianship. Beginning band will perform at least two concerts a year. This is a graded class and part of the music curriculum.
Intermediate Band: Grades 6, 7, 8. Prerequisites: Beginning Band, Audition, and/or Director permission. Emphasis is placed on learning performance skills and more advanced musical skills such as tone production, rhythm, technique, intonation, and musicianship. Intermediate Band will perform at least two concerts a year. This is a graded class and part of the music curriculum.
Advanced Band: Grades 6, 7, 8. Prerequisites: Beginning or Intermediate Band, Audition, and/or Director permission. Emphasis is placed on learning performance skills and advanced musical skills such as tone production, rhythm, technique, intonation, and musicianship. Advanced Band will perform at least two concerts a year. Advanced Band members are required to perform at band reviews. This is a graded class and part of the music curriculum.
Jazz Band: Grades 6, 7, 8. Prerequisites: Audition, and/or Director's permission. Emphasis is placed on learning the style and culture of jazz music and other styles like latin, swing, and rock. Auditions will be held the second week of class every year. Jazz band will play at various jazz festivals, band reviews, and at promotion. This is a graded class and part of the music curriculum.
Drumline: Grades 6, 7, 8. Prerequisites: Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced Band, Audition, and/or Director's permission. The winter percussion season begins at the beginning of the school year and continues through the end of May. Auditions are held during the first week of practice. Performances consist of a three to five minute show featuring music and movement. All shows are held indoors on standard gym floor. Rehearsals are held after school two days a week or as needed. The Drumline performs with Marching Band at all Band Reviews held during the Spring Season. Marching Band is an outdoor activity. This is an extracurricular activity and not graded.
Auxiliary Unit: Grades 6, 7, 8. Prerequisites: Audition, and/or Director's permission. The Winter Guard season begins at the beginning of the school year and continues through the end of May. Auditions are held during the last week of school. Performances consist of a three to five minute show featuring music and movement. All shows are held indoors on standard gym floor. Rehearsals are held after school two days or as needed. The Auxillary Units perform with Marching Band at all Band Reviews held during the Spring Season. Marching Band is an outdoor activity. This is a co-curricular activity and is a graded class as part of the music curriculum.
Marching Band: Grades 6, 7, 8. Prerequisites: Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced Band, Audition and/or Director's permission. Marching Band is made of the members of Advanced Band and members of Beginning and Intermediate Band that successfully audition. Marching band will perform at various band reviews throughout the year. It will typically start at the end of the second quarter of the school calendar. Marching Band is the premier ambassador performing group of the band program. This is an extracurricular activity and not graded.
